Jebel Ataliya comprises four concentric ring intrusions around a central plug, the whole slightly elliptically-shaped complex being 12 km long. It comprises syenites, from which quartz may be absent or up to 30%, perthite, hornblende with rims of aegirine-augite or hornblende altering to riebeckite; barkevikitic amphibole and orange-brown biotite are rare (Hohndorf et al., 1994; J.R. Vail pers. comm., 2000).

Age: 
A nine point Rb-Sr isochron gave an age of 297.0±6.1 Ma (Hohndorf et al., 1994).
